The African agricultural sector employs roughly one-third of the continent’s population. However, African nations collectively import more than USD 50 billion in food each year — a figure that could rise to as much as USD 110 billion this year, seven times higher than in 2018, according to a study by Afreximbank. Promoting food security and reducing dependence on imported food remain central priorities for policymakers across Africa. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is set to become the largest regional free trade area in terms of both membership and population, encompassing more than 1.3 billion people, with a projected combined GDP of approximately USD 7 trillion by 2035. This vast market presents significant potential for economic growth, with agriculture positioned as a driving force for the continent’s development. Strategic investments in agricultural development — focusing on technology, access to inputs, mechanization, productivity gains, and value chain integration — can accelerate agribusiness growth, building on the lessons learned from Brazil’s agricultural transformation.

Food Sovereignty: Common Challenges and Shared Solutions between Brazil and Africa

Africa holds nearly 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, yet paradoxically still relies on food imports to meet its domestic demand. This scenario presents significant challenges but also reveals major opportunities to advance toward the continent’s food sovereignty. At the same time, Brazil stands out as a global agribusiness powerhouse, combining competitive advantages, high productivity, and technological innovation, even in adverse environments.

Infrastructure for Sustainable Agricultural Production: Pathways to Food Security in Brazil and Africa

Plenary | Venue: Ballroom
According to a study published by the World Bank, approximately 37% of food produced on the African continent is lost or wasted due to inadequate storage. African food supply chains are four times longer than those in Europe and can account for up to 45% of the price of certain basic commodities. This session will address the strategic role of logistical infrastructure — including transportation, storage, irrigation, and access to technology — in expanding agricultural production, reducing costs, and ensuring food quality. The discussion will highlight how investments in this sector can overcome bottlenecks, boost agribusiness, promote rural development, and strengthen food security in both Brazil and Africa, while also exploring models of cooperation and innovation that can maximize these advances.

Food Sovereignty Financing: The Role of Development and Promotion Institutions in Modern Agriculture

Plenary | Venue: Ballroom
Financial institutions play a strategic role in promoting sustainable agricultural development and building food sovereignty in developing countries. According to the African Development Bank, to address the USD 75 billion annual financing gap for farmers and agricultural enterprises, requires the deployment of multiple financial instruments, including trade credit guarantees, first-loss coverage, and blended finance mechanisms to reduce the high transaction costs. Multilateral development banks and international financial institutions act not only as sources of funding but also as catalysts for transformation, providing technical assistance, support for public policies, and incentives for the adoption of agroecological and inclusive practices. Targeted financing for the agricultural sector can boost food security, reduce rural poverty, and contribute to the Zero Hunger goal.

Intelligent Agri-Food Systems: Energy Transition and Food Security in the Global South
15:00 - 16:00
Plenary | Venue: Ballroom
According to a FAO/IRENA report, agrifood systems consume nearly 30% of global energy and contribute to almost one-third of greenhouse gas emissions. Modern agriculture remains highly dependent on fossil fuels to operate machinery and transportation, as well as on intensive electricity use for processing, storage, and refrigeration. The blue economy in Brazil and Africa holds significant potential as a pillar of food security, promoting the sustainable use of aquatic resources to ensure food supply, foster economic development, and protect marine ecosystems.
Energy is essential to achieving food security. This panel will discuss how sustainable, climate-smart energy solutions can drive agricultural innovation and support resilient and equitable food systems — particularly across the Global South.
