According to a FAO/IRENA report, agrifood systems consume nearly 30% of global energy and contribute to almost one-third of greenhouse gas emissions. Modern agriculture remains highly dependent on fossil fuels to operate machinery and transportation, as well as on intensive electricity use for processing, storage, and refrigeration. The blue economy in Brazil and Africa holds significant potential as a pillar of food security, promoting the sustainable use of aquatic resources to ensure food supply, foster economic development, and protect marine ecosystems.

Energy is essential to achieving food security. This panel will discuss how sustainable, climate-smart energy solutions can drive agricultural innovation and support resilient and equitable food systems — particularly across the Global South.
